We are beginning the process of amending the soil for the lavender. Step 1. Alpaca poop. We have a wonderful neighbor that we are getting poop from. We spent the weekend loading the back of the pickup with the tractor with poop and piling it next to the field so that it can go into the rows.
Step 2. We are going to go to BURRT to get more organic material (more poop - horse manure) to also go in the rows.
Step 3. Also at BURRT they have a type of pea gravel - but a little different it is glass that is recycled that is the exact same size as pea gravel but much cheaper and same consistency as pea gravel and not sharp so we are going to use it.
Step 4. MULCH LOTS and LOTS of mulch
We need to put all of the above into the soil to help the Caliche Clay drain and have the proper PH 6.7-7 for the lavender. We will do test patches of the soil throughout the entire acre to make sure that the soil is the proper PH after we have put in the pea gravel glass, organic matter, and mulch. We will also do a water test to make sure that the soil is draining properly. To do this you dig a hole and put water into the hole. If it does not drain within 30 minutes it does not have the right consistency for the lavender.
